The Need
Did you know that almost
20% of women and over 25% of children
in the DMV area live below the poverty level?
Unfortunately, in almost every single country the number of children living below the poverty level has grown over the past 18 years and almost half of homeless unaccompanied youth
(up to 24 years old) cite conflict with their family or friends as the reason for homelessness.
There are a few direct correlations to homelessness in which Women Giving Back works to improve statistics locally, nationally and internationally. We serve women and children who have escaped domestic abuse with simply the clothing on their back, those fleeing sex trafficking and women coming out incarceration. Our list of whom we support grows all too often as we cannot turn away the women and children in need.
1 in 4 women experience severe intimate partner physical violence and on a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide. Human trafficking is a hidden crime as victims rarely come forward to seek help because of language barriers, fear of the traffickers, and/or fear of law enforcement.” That doesn’t happen in my city!” is a myth. And, women coming out of prison do so with very few belongings in a clear, plastic bag and a bus ticket back to where they were arrested from. Nothing more.
