Helping Women and Children in Crisis by Distributing Clothing and Other Essentials at No Cost

Believe it or not, the 2026-2027 school year has begun! On August 8th, our annual Back-to-School event helped 195 students prepare for the year ahead with backpacks filled with school supplies and paired with new tennis shoes. Families were also able to shop the Boutique, giving parents the opportunity to pick out clothing for growing kids before that all-important first day.

And the impact stretched well beyond one event. Throughout August, additional backpacks continued making their way to students, including 225 distributed through Referral Partners and 178 given out on subsequent Boutique Days. This helped ensure the hundreds of backpacks collected by our community reached families throughout the region. The small number remaining will be stored for next year's Back-to-School season, so nothing goes to waste!

A special thank you to Apple Federal Credit Union, whose volunteers joined us once again to welcome families, assist shoppers, and help keep everything running smoothly. We're so grateful to everyone who helped local students walk into a new school year feeling prepared and confident.

If it feels like Women Giving Back has been everywhere lately…we kind of have!

This month, our team - especially our new Hub Coordinator, Marcela has been busy getting out into the community, from school open houses and family resource nights to National Night Out and WIC's August Breastfeeding Event.

These events give us the chance to make sure more families know about the resources available at WGB, but they're just as valuable for us. Every conversation helps us learn more about the needs in our community, discover other resources available to our clients, and build relationships with the organizations working alongside us.

So if you spot the WGB table while you're out and about, feel free to come say hi!

LOOKING AHEAD

Looking for a job or preparing to return to the workforce? WGB and CREW are hosting a free Resume Writing Workshop on Tuesday, September 15 from 4:30–6:00 PM.

Participants will receive hands-on guidance with resume writing and interviewing, including one-on-one coaching to help highlight their skills, experience, and strengths. Attendees should bring a current resume or information about their work history, education, and skills.

Registration is required. This workshop is especially intended for those who could use a little extra support getting back on their feet, so please help us share the opportunity with clients, friends, neighbors, or community members who may benefit.

For some, the next step toward financial independence may be creating an opportunity of their own. On October 6th, WGB will host Starting Your Business the Right Way, presented by Launch Loudoun through Loudoun County Economic Development.

This free workshop will walk aspiring entrepreneurs through the practical side of getting started, including the legal startup process and the free programs, resources, and expert support available through Loudoun County. The session will be offered in English and Spanish, helping make these resources accessible to even more members of our community.

Volunteering for Women’s Equality Day

In honor of Women’s Equality Day, teams from VW Financial Services and Northwest Federal Credit Union traded their usual workdays for a day of volunteering at Women Giving Back.

Both groups jumped into the work that keeps WGB running - sorting donations, preparing clothing for the Boutique, and helping us stay ready for the women and children who walk through our doors each week.

Women’s Equality Day commemorates the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote, while also recognizing the continued work toward greater equality and opportunity for women. At WGB, we see a piece of that work every day as we help women overcome barriers, regain stability, return to the workforce, and move toward greater independence. And we very much appreciate these groups dedicating their time to our mission.

August called for a little extra help, and our Come n’ Go volunteers answered in a BIG way! Together, they logged an incredible 442 volunteer hours this month, helping us sort, organize, restock, and get the facility fully back up and running after a challenging few weeks.

These are the volunteers who have been alongside us through busy seasons, big changes, unexpected setbacks, and plenty of ordinary days in between. That familiarity proved especially valuable this month - they knew what needed to be done and jumped right in wherever they were needed.

We are grateful for every volunteer who walks through our doors, from first-timers to corporate groups to familiar faces we see week after week. But this month, we wanted to give an extra-special thank you to our Come n’ Go crew for helping see us through the ups and downs and out the other side.
