HomeAid, Toll Brothers and Women Giving Back Open Doors to Permanent Store

Since the Women Giving Back (WGB) Store opened in 2007, its volunteers have distributed more than 50,000 items of clothing to women and children from 100+ shelters in Northern Virginia. The overall goal—helping transitionally homeless women get free, professional clothing so they can more easily re-enter the workplace—has been an enormously successful enterprise.

And now, it will enjoy the stability of a more permanent home thanks to the May 13 dedication of a 5,400+ square foot store, located at 20 Export Drive in Sterling. The new space, leased at a very competitive rate with the support of HomeAid Northern Virginia and sponsors, was converted from raw warehouse space into a store by Builder Captain Toll Brothers and a team of 25 trade partners.

HomeAid and Augustine Homes Renovate Good Shepherd Home
“When it comes to helping end homelessness, HomeAid Northern Virginia is one of the finest organizations around," said Pam Kovach, executive director of the Good Shepherd Housing Foundation. "It would be impossible to calculate how far reaching their contributions have been, as they've worked with local builders to renovate and improve transitional housing and shelters in our area. We could give dollar amounts, but it goes so far beyond that.”

So began Kovach's description of the latest HomeAid project: the renovation of one of Good Shepherd's homes, with Augustine Homes serving as Builder Captain. Improvements, which included mold remediation, a renovated kitchen and a new bathroom, totaled more than $47,000 in value. The home, reserved for families of very low income, is unusual in Prince William County because it does not have specific time restraints on how long a family can live there.

BOWA Completes First Project with HomeAid and NOVACO

One flood would be bad enough, but three floods was a disaster for one of NOVACO's condo units. And, although the cause of the flooding was fixed relatively easily with improved grading and draining, the water damage left behind included destroyed flooring and mold.

It was then that NOVACO joined forces with HomeAid for the fifth time, welcoming builder captain BOWA for its very first renovation project with HomeAid.

Getting a New Lease on Life, Thanks to Beazer Homes and HomeAid
If the kitchen is the heart of a home, then the Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter (LAWS) is getting a new lease on life. Starting in late May, builder captain Beazer Homes kicked off a home renovation project that will encompass the kitchen and other, smaller areas of the shelter. The project, estimated at approximately $12,000, will be covered 100 percent, with HomeAid Northern Virginia able to cover a portion of the costs through a grant from the United Way of the National Capital Area.

CarrHomes Updating Home for Reston Interfaith
Over the last five years, HomeAid Northern Virginia has worked to renovate five of Reston Interfaith Housing Corporation's 47 townhouses, all of which are rented to families and individuals who earn half or less than half of the area median income. The most recent project, captained by CarrHomes, involves the renovation of a two-bedroom unit, with work encompassing nearly all aspects of the home, including exterior siding repairs, replacement and painting; interior painting; electrical repairs and upgrades; carpet cleaning; and bathroom repairs. The total value of the project is approximately $4,000.

“HomeAid has been extremely helpful to us, and we consider them a strong partner in our acquisition process," said Tim McMahon, vice president of Housing and Community Development for Reston Interfaith. "They've always stood at the ready for us, and they've always been there when we've needed help.”

How We Help Our Community:
HomeAid Northern Virginia builds and renovates homeless shelters, transitional houses, food banks, medical clinics, counseling centers, and other facilities that help homeless people gain stability and a roof over their heads. HomeAid leverages the resources of the homebuilding community and its corporate partners to conduct major renovations to shelters and homes to provide safe, stable and new living arrangements for previously homeless persons. HomeAid’s partners and resources help to significantly reduce the construction costs to care provider organizations, thereby allowing them to redirect those dollars back into programs and services for these homeless families and individuals.
